Edmonton is the capital city of the Province of Alberta. It is the second largest city in this vast western province. This scenic look of the city is visually enhanced by its geographic location along the North Saskatchewan River in central Alberta.

In 1754, explorers from the Hudson Bay Company are thought to be the first Europeans to inhabit this area. As with most Canadian history, the main purpose of the first explorers and settlers, of this area was to establish fur trading with the local Indian natives. In 1795, Fort Edmonton was established as a major western trading post for the Hudson's Bay Company. Over time, the highly fertile lands surrounding Fort Edmonton attracted settlers in large numbers. About 1897, Edmonton became well known as one of the main northern gateways for potential prospectors who were hoping to strike it rich during the Klondike Gold Rush. Edmonton was incorporated as a city in 1904. A year later it became the provincial capital when the province of Alberta joined the Canadian Confederation. Within the same year, the Canadian Northern Railway became operational in Edmonton. This major milestone caused another major population influx within the city.

Edmonton benefits economically from the stability of being a government city as well as a being one of the main oil and gas company locations within Canada. It is known as the gateway to the northern gas and oil and diamond drilling areas. This large cosmopolitan city boasts an average annual family income of about $98,000, one of the highest in the country. Combined the city proper and the metropolitan area have a population base of over one million people.

Edmonton is also known as The Festival City. It hosts a large number of year round festivals and events. Capital X (originally called Klondike days) draws a huge audience in the summer. The Canadian Finals Rodeo and Farmfair are held at the same time in December. Another event of note in December, and well worth a visit, is Candy Cane Lane. Two hundred homes along 148th Street, are impressively dressed up with Christmas lights. Thousands of visitors stroll the area, or take a sleigh ride to view this large and enchanting display of lights and seasonal finery.
