Kingston is the oldest city in the province of Ontario. It is steeped in early Canadian history when it was originally founded as a trading post. In the late 1600's, Kingston was named Fort Cataraqui. The English won the land from the French in 1758 and renamed it once again to Fort Frontenac. In the middle 1800's, Queen Victoria renamed the fort to its current name, Kingston.

In the early 1800's, Kingston was a large base for the Royal Navy. The military and the navy were positioned at what came to be known as Fort Henry. This remarkable fort still stands as a tourist attraction to this day. Historically the area was populated with a large influx of British immigrants as well as Americans after the American Revolution and then the Civil War. The completion of the Rideau Canal in 1832 increased Kingston's importance as a strong military town and she benefited economically from her strategic location at the junction of the St. Lawrence River and Lake Ontario. The general land area was known as Upper Canada.

Kingston was home to Canada's first Prime Minister, Sir John A. Macdonald. It was also the official capital city of Canada which kept immigration flowing and commercial entities growing. The city flourished and was the main area for ship building and trains in Upper Canada. This economic status kept growing until Queen Victoria named Ottawa as the new national capital city.

Today Kingston is still a thriving community and is known as a world renown educational centre thanks to the installation of Queen's University, St. Lawrence College and the Royal Military College. Queen's University was the first Canadian university to actually grant an official degree. Today it attracts an international roster of students and professors and is Canada's highest ranking academic university.

Throughout most of its history, Kingston was economically blessed. Although no longer an industrial town, it is still a scenically breathtaking city bustling with activity. Tourism plays large part in her continued economic status as well. The harbour front has been revitalized with stunning, luxury apartments, hotels, restaurants, parks and walkways. It is also home to some of Kingston's night life. Kingston also enjoys geographical proximity to the Thousand Islands, which is a summer home for many wealthy Canadians and Americans. One very well known Canadian comedian and actor who lives in the area is Dan Akroyd, of Ghostbusters fame and of course his starring role with John Belushi in the Blues Brothers.

In the older parts of Kingston, there are still the romantic remains of cobblestone streets and heritage buildings. Many of these charming historical buildings are inhabited by boutique style gift and tourist shops which make for a fine day of shopping. Kingston is also home to many old world, charming bed and breakfast inns which cater to tourists with their old world cachet and beguiling history.
